Diplomatic (A) Visa for Georgia: A1–A5 Explained (2026)

The diplomatic visa (category A) is a short-term Georgian visa intended exclusively for diplomatic and official travel. It is one of the visa categories established by Article 7 of the Law of Georgia on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons.

The five sub-categories

Georgia issues five types of diplomatic visas:

• A1 — for senior officials of foreign legislative and executive authorities, members of high-level state delegations and their accompanying family members travelling on state, official, working, friendly or unofficial visits.
• A2 — for members of diplomatic missions and equivalent representative offices accredited to Georgia, consular officers and their family members, as well as staff of international organisations’ representative offices in Georgia who enjoy diplomatic status and their family members.
• A3 — for diplomatic couriers and persons travelling to Georgia on a special diplomatic mission.
• A4 — for honorary consuls of Georgia who are foreign nationals and their accompanying family members.
• A5 — for persons whose entry serves the national interests of Georgia, as well as holders of diplomatic passports travelling on an official working visit.

Type and validity

A diplomatic visa is a short-term visa.

It may be issued as:

• a single-entry visa permitting a stay of up to 30 calendar days; or
• a multiple-entry visa with a validity period of up to five years, in accordance with the Law.

The type of visa issued depends on the purpose and circumstances of the official visit.

Extension

A diplomatic visa may be extended where the legal grounds for its issuance continue to exist.

Applications for an extension are submitted through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, which considers the application and makes the relevant decision in accordance with the Law.

Is this the right visa for you?

For the vast majority of travellers, the answer is no.

Most visitors to Georgia instead rely on:

• Visa-Free Entry, if their nationality qualifies;
• the Ordinary (C) Visa for tourism, private visits and most short-term business travel; or
• the Immigration (D) Visa for long-term purposes such as employment, study, family reunification or investment.

Frequently asked questions

Who needs a diplomatic (A) visa?

Only official visitors: foreign heads of state and senior delegations, accredited diplomats and consular officials and their families, diplomatic couriers, Georgia's foreign-national honorary consuls, and certain national-interest missions. Ordinary tourists, workers and relocators do not use category A.

Does an A visa give diplomatic immunity?

Holders of the A1 category enjoy diplomatic immunity in Georgia throughout the period of the visa's validity, under Article 7 of the Law on Aliens. The other A subcategories reflect official status but do not automatically confer A1-level immunity.

Can a diplomatic visa be extended?

Yes. Short-term diplomatic and special visas can be extended, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia handles both the documentation and the decision.
