D6 Visa for Georgia: Immigration Visa for Minor Students (from 1 September 2026)

The D6 visa is a new sub-category of Georgia’s immigration (D) visa, introduced by the 2026 amendments to the Law of Georgia on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons. It takes effect on 1 September 2026.

The category is designed specifically for minor foreign nationals who come to Georgia for education and, importantly, also covers the family members accompanying them.

Who the D6 visa is for

The D6 visa may be issued to:

• a minor who comes to, or is already lawfully present in, Georgia to study at an authorised higher education institution or authorised vocational education institution;
• a minor who comes to, or is already lawfully present in, Georgia to study at an authorised general education institution, until completing full general education;
• where the student is a minor, the student’s parents or other legal representatives and minor siblings, until the student reaches 18 years of age.

The purpose of the category is to allow a minor student and the accompanying immediate family to remain in Georgia under the same immigration framework.

Type and validity

The D6 visa is a long-term (immigration) visa.

Like all D visas, it is a multiple-entry visa that may be issued with a validity period of 90 calendar days or one year, depending on the applicable category.

From 1 September 2026, a one-year D visa may be issued only under D5 (certain property owners) and D6.

A D6 visa is intended for foreign nationals relocating to Georgia for long-term educational purposes and may also serve as the basis for applying for a Georgian residence permit, where the statutory requirements are met.

Effective date and the D3 reform

The D6 category takes effect on 1 September 2026.

At the same time, the scope of the D3 visa is narrowed to adult students and researchers. As a result:

• adult students and researchers use D3;
• minor students use D6; and
• the parents or other legal representatives and minor siblings accompanying a minor student may also obtain a D6 visa.

Residence permits

A D6 visa allows eligible applicants to enter and remain in Georgia for long-term educational purposes.

Applications for a D6 visa are submitted through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and the relevant Georgian embassy or consulate, in accordance with the applicable visa procedures.
